What attracted you to your chosen work?

I have always liked to work with people. Early on, there was nothing better than being a traveling salesman, visiting customers in different roles across the country, learning about their businesses and building strong sales relationships with them.

What skills did you develop early that are still useful today?

I learned very quickly that treating customers with the utmost respect and truly listening to their needs is paramount. By understanding their challenges first, I could help them implement systems that actually worked for them, which is exactly how I built the customer base I have today. Additionally, always picking up the phone when they encounter an inconvenient problem goes a long way in sustaining strong customer relationships.

How have you grown in your career at Avery Dennison?

Over the past two years, since the acquisition of Thermopatch by Avery Dennison, I feel like I’m learning every day. Moving from a large family business into an international corporation takes time, especially when learning the processes required to meet new expectations.

Fortunately, the team I work with has a vast amount of knowledge and has been incredibly supportive in helping me grow in my role.

What's the biggest stretch opportunity you've taken on?

Stepping into the role of Commercial Lead has been my biggest stretch yet. Mastering all the new processes and learning how they need to be delivered has been challenging, making it the most significant transition from my previous role.

By treating people as individuals, you build trust, which naturally drives sales.

What role has mentorship played in your career?

I have worked with many mentors over the years, both within and outside of Avery Dennison. I often think back to one of my earliest mentors from my time in the motor industry, Mr. Andy Moore. He really showed me how to look after customers and make them feel important, rather than just treating them like another account number. By treating people as individuals, you build trust, which naturally drives sales.

What's the best career decision you've ever made?

Twenty-three years ago, I accepted a role as a Sales Executive for a company called Ducker Engineering, selling the Thermopatch range of products. Since taking that position, I have been through three company buyouts. Today, I’m proud to still be selling this core range of products alongside the expanded Avery Dennison portfolio.

As you think about the next steps in your career, what are the most important actions you plan to take?

Building the new workwear team at the Harrogate site is key for me. My goal is to take our current operations and establish us as the leading supplier of garment identification products in the United Kingdom. Achieving this will truly showcase what we can accomplish as a company and mark a major success for my career path.

What do you enjoy most about the work you do?

It goes back to why I started out in sales in the first place: meeting new people, traveling around the UK and Europe, and constantly learning about how different businesses operate.
