What attracted you to your chosen work?

Choosing to work in the manufacturing industry came from a blend of personal passion, professional growth, and the industry's dynamic nature. From an early age, I had a strong interest in how things are made and the intricate processes behind manufacturing. AD provided a platform to turn that curiosity into practical skills.

The label and packaging industry is at the forefront of innovation, especially with the growing emphasis on sustainable materials and processes. Being part of an industry that continually evolves to meet environmental challenges is exciting and fulfilling. Additionally, the manufacturing process involves complex problem-solving and continuous improvement, which aligns with my analytical and creative skills.

I also wanted to be a ray of hope for the women in my community, showing that girls can study and earn more, even in male-dominated environments.

What skills did you develop early that are still useful today?

A solid understanding of engineering principles, materials science, and manufacturing processes has been crucial. This technical foundation allows me to troubleshoot issues, optimize production, and innovate effectively. Early exposure to complex problem-solving scenarios in my master’s degree helped me develop a systematic approach to identifying, analyzing, and resolving issues.

Precision and attention to detail are critical in manufacturing, especially when dealing with labels and packaging materials that must meet stringent quality standards and customer expectations.

Managing projects from conception to completion requires strong organizational and planning skills. Early experience in project management taught me how to coordinate resources, timelines, and team efforts effectively. Early experiences in working with teams helped me develop strong communication and collaboration skills, which are essential for successful project execution and fostering a positive culture.

The manufacturing industry is dynamic, with frequent changes in technology, regulations, and market demands. Early exposure to a variety of projects and challenges helped me become adaptable and open to learning new skills and approaches. Familiarity with digital tools and technologies, such as ANSYS software and data analytics platforms, has been increasingly important. Early adoption of these technologies has positioned me well for the ongoing digital transformation in manufacturing.

How have you grown in your career at Avery Dennison?

Over two years, I deepened my understanding of manufacturing processes and gained advanced knowledge in materials science, process optimization, and quality control, enabling me to address complex technical challenges effectively.

My role in project management has honed my leadership skills, including team management, conflict resolution, and strategic planning. My ability to manage large-scale projects has also improved, as I've successfully led multiple projects, ensuring they meet deadlines, stay within budget, and achieve the desired outcomes. My problem-solving skills have been sharpened through continuous exposure to new challenges, enabling me to develop innovative solutions and improve operational processes. I've learned to effectively convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment and facilitating smooth project execution.

My involvement in strategic initiatives, such as the digitization project for toll manufacturing business data management, has enhanced my ability to think strategically. I've learned to align technical solutions with business objectives, driving long-term value for the company. Over two years, I've built a robust professional network within and outside the company. This network has provided valuable insights, support, and opportunities for collaboration, enhancing my professional growth and development.

Overall, my career at our company has been marked by continuous learning, increasing responsibilities, and significant contributions to the company's success. I've grown into a well-rounded professional capable of leading technical and strategic initiatives that drive innovation and operational excellence.

What's the biggest stretch opportunity you've taken on?

The biggest stretch opportunity I took on as a Graphics Quality Engineer for the India business was leading a major quality improvement initiative aimed at enhancing the consistency across all our product lines. This project was challenging due to its scale, complexity, and the significant impact it had on our operations and customer satisfaction. Successful implementation necessitated close collaboration across various departments, including R&D, production, supply chain, commercial and quality control.

This opportunity expanded my technical and leadership skills. I gained valuable experience in managing large-scale projects, leading cross-functional teams, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. It also reinforced the importance of quality and innovation in maintaining business success.

What role has mentorship played in your career?

Mentors have helped me develop and refine essential skills, both technical and soft. They provided hands-on training, shared industry best practices, and offered constructive feedback, which has been invaluable for my professional growth. Hemant Tewari and Anil Lal have been great mentors in my career. Hemant always motivated me to take challenges and supported my views, and Anil Lal has given me great opportunities to learn and guided me to develop my skills.

Having a mentor to discuss challenges and successes with has boosted my confidence. Their encouragement and belief in my abilities have motivated me to take on new challenges. Their experience and perspective have helped me approach problems more strategically and develop effective solutions. By observing my mentors and receiving their feedback, I have learned how to lead teams effectively, manage conflicts, and inspire others.

Beyond professional development, mentors have also contributed to my personal growth. They have helped me develop a growth mindset, encouraged continuous learning, and fostered resilience in the face of challenges. Mentors have exposed me to new ideas, technologies, and industry trends. Their insights have kept me updated and adaptable, ensuring I stay at the forefront of advancements in our industry.

Knowing I have someone to turn to for advice, guidance, support, and encouragement has been reassuring and empowering. Experiencing the benefits of mentorship has inspired me to mentor others. I am committed to sharing my knowledge and experiences with junior colleagues, helping them navigate their careers and achieve their goals.

Actively seeking feedback remains a cornerstone of my continuous self-improvement journey.
